Blogs by Danny B Part 33 Tim Donaghy
Most Sports fans are familiar with the 2007 NBA betting scandal that involved referee Tim Donaghy and pro sports bettor Jimmy "The Sheep" Battista, if not read the book Personal Foul written by Tim Donaghy... Millions of dollars were made betting NBA games using Donaghy's information that was passed on to Jimmy Battista via a third party member.. When the story broke in 07 handicapping services were name dropping Donaghy for leverage with their clients, not all but many did to exploit game fixing, etc... Most bettors believe games are fixed anyway so it was the perfect storm for Cappers..
In mid October 2010 a friend of mine told me he ran into Donaghy in Florida and suggested I contact him and offer Donaghy a job since the NBA season was getting ready to tip off.. The first thing that came to my mind was that there is no way that would happen and I would be wasting my time, Tim was still on probation and it would not fly... After exchanging emails Donaghy gave me a call and agreed to call into my radio show to promote his book, Personal Foul.. I also asked him if he could fly up to met me to talk about a job as an NBA analyst on my weekly radio show .. Tim did fly up and was given permission to work for me as long as he did not give out picks or promote gambling on the show.. Tim was allowed to breakdown matchups and promote his book.. Basically if he wrote it he could quote it!
In 2010 the scandal was still fresh and sports bettors were more than excited to hear Tim on the show, some were upset with his actions but others were opened minded and wanted in on the action.. Even tough Tim could not talk gambling with the public he was able to share his thoughts with me and in turn I would pass the info to my clients..
Within a few weeks word got out that Donaghy was working with me and the Press had a field day bashing and finger pointing, but that is what they do.. The man needed a job and no one could dispute he was a true NBA Insider and knew the game better than most, so why not work for a handicapper, its not like he had a lot of options..
The 2010/2011 NBA season was amazing, even though Tim was not on the court he understood how the NBA works and the proof was in the results right up to Dallas beating the Heat in the NBA Finals... Tim and I were on our way and ready to make a lot of money together..
